Kasten Calls for Collaboration to Reduce the Potential of Fraud and Abuse

Mequon, WI, September 12, 2013 – Addressing attendees at the annual National Association of Dental Plans (NADP) conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday morning, Craig Kasten, President of Scion Dental, called for increased collaboration amongst dental benefit managers and professional associations to help reduce pediatric dental over-treatment.

In his address, Kasten provided treatment details from five (5) specific cases of suspected abuse on low income children, ages five and under. He urged the formulation of more specific clinical patient treatment guidelines, favoring a more conservative approach to the restoration of primary teeth.

Kasten cited findings from a 1,500 page report released in June 2013 by the U.S. Senate alleging that "fundamentally deceptive" business models were employed by several dental chains. The report is based on a two-year U.S. Senate investigation. In his own research, Kasten found indications that potential over-treatment is not limited to practitioners employed by the dental chains studied by the U.S. Senate probe.

"Advances in technology allow for fresh solutions to be developed that enable previously undetected problems to be rapidly identified,” added Kasten, who is also the founder and CEO of Wonderbox Technologies, a cloud computing company that develops software for use by administrators of specialty benefits. He further indicated that the next important hurdle is for dental benefit managers to develop appropriate investigation protocols. Such protocols can help dental benefit managers confirm suspected cases of over-treatment and apply appropriate sanctions.
